Performance artwork "I'm a Barbie Girl, in an Orwell World" (2021)

This work is a collaboration between Lia Lyutakova and Anna Navumchyk, performed in response to the installment of extra surveillance cameras on university grounds during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The performance consisted of a CCTV camera attached to the body of a barbie doll, ridiculing the 'Big Brother' connotation of surveillance. This object greeted students and lecturers who entered the lecture hall with the accompaniment of audio through a hidden speaker. The audio was generated by the artists according to the specific features of the person entering the room. By ominously categorising their gender and appearance, the work aims to bring attention to the ways in which surveillance can be used to label, organise and manipulate societies.
